dc.description.abstract Malnutrition is one of the most important complications of chronic renal failure, it may lead to increased morbidity and mortality among hemodialysis patients, malnutrition is prevalent worldwide in hemodialysis patients as in Sudan. This study aimed to estimate nutritional status in hemodialysis patients at the Kassala Kidney center. This study is case control study conducted in Kassala kidney center during September to October-2017.The study comprised100 individuals (50 cases,50control). Of each blood sample was collected and levels of albumin, total protein, hemoglobin, calcium, creatinine, urea, potassium, sodium were determined and BMI was calculated.Data obtained was analyzedusing Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS v.16), (P<0.05) was considered significant, interpretation of the results using independent sample t-test, this studyshowed decreased values of body mass index, albumin levels, total protein, hemoglobin and calcium with highly significant differences (p<0.0001)among patients whencompared to control, this study alsoshowed statistically significant elevatedconcentrations of urea, creatinine, sodium and potassiumamong cases when compared to control. On the basis of results of albumin and BMI this study found40% of HDP were malnourished and 60%were not affected,in addition 46% of cases had hypoprotenima, while 14% had anemia, and 96% had hypocalciumia when compared withreference range. Depending on the results of this study we recommend, the use of additional biochemical markers such as lipid profile and vitamins assessment to have more profound image for nutritional status of HDP,provide nutritional counseling and education to increase adherence to diet and fluid advice, routine assessmentof the nutritional status of HDP, the study population should be expanded to include large number of the HDP from more areas of Sudan to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the nutritional status of cases in the country. en_US
