Abstract:
Pharmaceutical care basically means improving the medication use process in order to improve outcomes, including the patients’ quality of life, and that involves a focus change for pharmacy from product to patient. This study aimed to evaluate the concept of pharmaceutical care especially in the Central Sudan in some public Hospitals (Medani, ELHassahessa, Rufaa and Arbagi hospitals), in order to clarify the implementation of and explore the need of Sudanese patients for pharmaceutical care services and barriers to do this care. A prospective-hospital-based study was carried out in which three questionnaires (face to face interviews) were used for health care providers and patients in these four public Hospitals. The results obtained revealed that, most of physicians (n=39; 53%) and (n= 37; 80%) pharmacists were familiar with the term of PC but it was not implemented. Patients (n=265; 59%) knew nothing about the term. The majority of physicians (n=57; 77%) and (n=27; 59%) of pharmacists and (n=332; 74.5%) of patients mentioned that pharmaceutical care was not implemented in their area. Most of the studied physicians (n=47; 63.5%) agreed that there were many barriers impairing the implementation of the pharmaceutical care. A minority of the respondent patients (n=145; 32.6%) mentioned that the reasons might be the inadequate pharmacist training or of (n=62; 83.4%) of physicians and (n=133; 29.8%) of patients. Other reasons the responsibility of pharmacists it was not clear and the rule of pharmacists was not understood by the patients all of physicians were agree (n=72; 97.5%) to this and (n=27; 58.7%) of pharmacists agreed also. It could be concluded that cooperation between physicians, pharmacists and national health care authorities, must take place and the various barriers to the implementation of pharmaceutical care.
