dc.description.abstract The need to distinguish the types of English articles, specially (zero and definite articles) turns out to have certain implications for the meaning of noun phrases, in that the definite article restricts the reference and meaning of noun phrase, whereas, zero article indicates general meaning of noun phrase. This study aimed at an investigation into EFL students' awareness of differentiating between English zero and definite article in written discourse. It also aimed at finding out whether the students are unaware of zero article, and finally, to suggest suitable strategies to help raising students' awareness in these two articles. The analytical descriptive method was used. Two tools for data collection were adopted: a diagnostic test and questionnaire. The test was distributed to (50) EFL students chosen randomly from Assabonabi secondary school for girls, Abu-hugar locality, Sinnar State. Whereas, the questionnaire was administered to (20) secondary EFL teachers who were also chosen randomly from the same locality. The collected data was analyzed manually and the results revealed that: a great number of students (75%) are not aware of the differences between zero and definite articles, a large number of students (70%) are unaware of English zero article and a suitable strategy. In addition to that, (95%) of English teachers views that doing a lot of exercises is a suitable strategy for rising student awareness in differentiating between zero and definite articles. Besides, (70%) of the respondents agreed that exerting much effort by teacher can help raising students awareness of the differences between zero and articles. Based on the above findings, the study recommends that teachers should raise EFL students' awareness of English zero and definite article, introduce students to situations that are relevant to these articles, beside, classifying articles exerting much effort in teaching them. Intensive practice in articles should also be given to students and a lot of space for articles must be allocated to Educational syllabuses. The researcher suggests two further studies: Techniques of Teaching Zero Articles at Basic Level, and Problems Encountered by Students in Distinguishing Between Zero and Definite Articles at University Level. en_US
