dc.description.abstract The relationship between inflation and unemployment has been a central topic in macroeconomics since the investigation of Phillips (1958), who documented a negative correlation between these variables in a century data of U.K. This study aimed at testing the existence of causal relationship between unemployment and inflation in Sudan during the period (1970-2009). The importance of this study stems from the fact that the existence of real relationship between unemployment and inflation has an impact on economic policies, where this relation played an important role in the decision-making process on macroeconomic policies. This study applied Granger causality test to the annual time series data of unemployment and inflation during the period examined. Our empirical evidences suggest that the causality direction is running positively from unemployment to inflation over the whole period (1970-2009) and the sub period (1980-1989), while there is no causality at all between unemployment and inflation during the sub-periods (1970-1979) and (1990-1999) and there is one evidence of a positive two way causality over the period (2000-2009). Our finding in this study refers to the importance of unemployment issue in Sudan and indicates that unemployment in Sudan is expected to be the factor that has the considerable impact on economic growth. This study recommended emphasizing the attention for curing unemployment as the attention of curing inflation, and concentration on the labor intensive activities, and to continue funding projects for graduates. en_US
