Abstract:
A seminar is one of the small group techniques in which student acts as an integral part in the educational process, it allows students’ participation and active involvement in the discussion and exchange of knowledge. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Anesthesia, Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences University of Gezira in the period from February to May 2013, to assess the effectiveness of seminar as an instructional method for anesthesia students. Data was collected from different batches of students (32, 33, and 34) through a specially designed questionnaire. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data. T-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to test the statistical significance of the results. Results showed that there are statistically significant differences in the knowledge and implementation of seminar according to the gender and batch in favor of female students. There are no statistically significant differences in other aspects. The study concluded that the students have poor perception of the seminar as effective teaching method, so it needs to be reviewed in the curriculum of anesthesia. The study recommended more studies in this area and more efforts to solve problems related to the implementation of seminar in terms of time, preparation and presentation.
