Effect of Powder and Aqueous Extract of Moringa oleifera Lam. Seeds on some Physical and Chemical Properties of Drinking Water

dc.description.abstract Moringa oleifera (Lam.) is widely used specially in Africa for cleaning the turbid water. This study investigated the effect of M. oleifera seeds powder and extract in purification of the turbid water compared to the chemical material the PAC (polymer aluminum chloride). that used for the same purpose. seeds of M. oleifera were motorized to prepare powder and aqueous extract. The water samples used in the study were obtained from the Blue Nile, al-Talha (Hafir) and Beka Canal. The procedures used in the physical and chemical analysies were in accordance with the standard methods for measuring Turbidity, pH, and total dissolved solids. The turbidity of the water obtained from the Blue Nile was reduced from 13040 Ntu to 24.0 Ntu after treatment with four grams of seed powder. Aqueous extract reduced the turbidity from 13040 Ntu to 6.5 Ntu when used at concentration of 15%. The turbidity of the water obtained from al-Talha (Hafir) and Beka Canal was reduced from 5110 Ntu to 31 Ntu and from 9240 Ntu to 28 Ntu respectively when treated with four grams of seeds powder. Using aqueous extract at 15% concentration reduced the turbidity of both water sources from 5110 Ntu to 271 Ntu and from 9240 Ntu to 43 Ntu respectively. The pH and the total dissolved solids of all the water sources were not affected by either the powder or extract treatments. From the results obtained, it is recommended to use aqueous extract of M. oleifera seeds to purify the turbid drinking water. en_US
