Abstract:
This experiment was conducted for a period of six months during the season 2005 and
2006 in University of Gezira, the objective of this study to assess and evaluate the
performance of onion bulbs under two storage methods. Local cultivar “Fadasi” onion bulbs
and two storage methods the traditional (Farmers practice) and improved storage structure
were used. For each type of storage the measurements were taken at 15 days intervals
throughout the experiment duration and the measured parameters were sprouting loss, rotting
loss, weight loss and dry matter content. All measured parameters were significantly higher
under traditional method of storage as compared to improved storage structure method. The
traditional method had (7.4%) sprouting loss, (5.6%) rotting loss and (34.1%) loss in weight,
whereas the improved method resulted in (4.2%), (2.5%) and (26.7%) for those parameters
respectively.
