dc.description.abstract Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Worldwide, the annual number of new cases of childhood cancer exceeds 200,000 and more than 80% of these are from the developing world. A descriptive hospital based study was conducted at the National Cancer Institute aimed to assess mothers' knowledge and attitudes regarding nursing care of child receiving chemotherapy at National Cancer Institute, Gezira State, Sudan 2015. The population of the present study includes mothers who have children receiving chemotherapy at National Cancer Institute during the period of the study. The sample size was consisted of all available mothers (87) who have children receiving chemotherapy at the National Cancer Institute during the period of the study. The data were collected by using a structured questionnaire designed by the researcher for the purposes of the study. The data were analyzed using the statistical Packages for Social Science program (SPSS). The results shows that (19.6%, 17.2% and 23.0%) of the study sample responded with correct complete answers regarding signs and symptoms, diagnoses and treatment of cancer respectively. Also (18.4%, 12.6% and 10.3%) of the study sample responded with correct complete answers regarding definition, the methods to give chemotherapy and duration of chemotherapy respectively; (21.8%, and 25.3%) of the study sample responded with correct complete answers regarding complications during chemotherapy and complications during and after chemotherapy respectively; (32.2%, 35.6% and 41.4%) of the study sample responded with correct complete answers regarding mothers' care before, during and after chemotherapy respectively; (27.6%, 20.7%, 17.2% and 19.6%) of the study sample responded with correct complete answers regarding mothers' knowledge regarding nursing care during chemotherapy respectively. The study concluded that; most of mothers' knowledge regarding nursing care of child receiving chemotherapy at National Cancer Institute were inadequate; the study recommended the conducting educational seminars and distributing flyers for mothers of children cancer. en_US
