dc.description.abstract Industrial and agricultural activities and military operations release lead and mercury in the environment . The accumulation of heavy metals in the environment due to industrial activities is of serious concern due to the toxicity of these metals to humans and other forms of life. These metals tend to persist indefinitely, circulating and eventually accumulating throughout the food chain, becoming a serious threat to the environment.The present study was conducted to determine the capability ofdecreasing high concentrations of lead and mercury , in a laboratory experiment using Pseudomonas aeruginosa which was obtained from Stac Laboratories , cultivated in Peptone water and kept for two days .Standard solutions containing ( 0.00 , 0.01 , 0.02 , 0.03 0.04 , 0.05 ppm Pb+2) give the absorbance ( 0.00 , 0.47 , 0.90 , 1.30 , 1.69 , 1.90 ) respectively , andStandard solutions containing ( 0.00 , 0.01 , 0.02 , 0.03 0.04 , 0.05 ppm Hg+2) give the absorbance ( 0.00 , 0.13 , 0.35 , 0.37 , 0.48 , 0.55 ) respectively . To each of 30ml water samples containg ( 0 , 2 , 6 , 10 , 14 , 18 , 22 , 26 , 30 ppm Pb2+ )and ( 0 , 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10 ppm Hg2+ ) were added5ml of the Peptone water and left at 370C for 7days . Colorimetric dithizone method was used to determine the concentrations of Pb2+ and Hg2+ in the samples at ƛmax 520 nm and 540 nm respectively before and after cultivation , the absorbance of Pb+2after cultivation were ( 0.00 , 0.00 , 0.21 , 0.23 , 0.25 , 0.28 , 0.29 , 0.32 , 0.43 ) respectively and the absorbance of Hg+2 after cultivation were ( 0.00 , 0.00 , 0.01 , 0.07 , 0.09 , 0.10 ) . The mechanisms of heavy metal removal involve up take and accumulation of heavy metal by microorganism from the water sample . The removal occurs by nonspecific binding of the metal to the cell surfaces , or involve metabolism-dependent intracellular uptake. The results showed that Pb2+ and Hg2+ levels were removed in all the samples except that for the sample containg 30ppm Pb2+ which was reduced to 0.01ppm and 10ppm Hg2+ which was reduced to 0.01ppm which are insignificant . It was concluded thatthis method is useful in removing harmful pollutants of lead and mercury from water . It is recommended that further studies should be carried out to get rid of bacteria . en_US
