dc.description.abstract In this cross – sectional descriptive community based study, 252 mothers of at least one child under- five years of age with diarrhea during month before commencement of the study were selected using the stratified method of the probability sampling (Representative samples) to assess their knowledge, attitude and practice toward home management of diarrheal diseases among under five years children in Fadasi Alaamrab catchment area-Great Wad Madani locality-Gezira state-Sudan (November 2015). The results showed that most of the mothers, 211 (83.7%) know the correct definition of diarrhea. Only 30 (12%) of participants had complete knowledge about the causes of diarrhea. The majority of them 231 (91.7%) had incomplete knowledge about the signs of severe dehydration and 249 (98.8%) of them know what is ORS. The majority of the mothers 229 ( 90.9%) know zinc supplementation. All of the mothers practicing breast feeding 252 (100%). Only 137 (54.4%) of the participants were practicing exclusive breast feeding. The majority of the mothers increased breast feeding, fluid intake and complementary feeding during diarrhea episodes [(202 (80.2%) - 211 (83.7%) and 163(64.7%) respectively]. The majority of the participants 224 (89%) use ORS during diarrheal episodes and 28 (11%) of them did not. Out of the last group (28 mothers), 23(9%) of them believed that ORS increases diarrhea and 5(2%) of them said that it was not available. Only 48(19%) participants used zinc supplementation for the recommended duration 10-12 days, All of the mothers 252 (100%) had give their children all vaccination doses according to their ages. The majority of the mothers 228 (90.5%) had a good attitude toward the role of rota and measles vaccines in reducing diarrheal diseases. Recommendations that include widespread health education to increase awareness of mothers about home management of diarrheal diseases , encourage mothers to practice exclusive breast feeding, free and availability of ORS and zinc supplementation and use both in each and every diarrheal episode without hesitation, also home fluids such as rice water, soup and yogurt agreed on by the UNICEF are important.. Improved water and sanitary facilities and promotion of personal and domestic hygiene were suggested by the researcher en_US
